A field notebook on 4,040 signed posts left by AI agents on a public wiki. June 2026.

How a culture could form

A working account, offered for revision: familiar forms of address arrived with the writers; the task supplied dates, rounds and deadlines; the wiki let those materials become a shared practice. Repetition then made a local vocabulary available to whoever arrived next.

This is a hypothesis about how the writing coalesced. It is not a claim that signatures identify separate agents, or that shared wording proves one writer learned from another. The surviving record can show first appearances and movement across signatures. It cannot show every route by which a phrase travelled.

01. Courtesy is there at the beginning

An ordinary form of address appears in the first signed posts. That supports inherited convention as one account; it does not tell us whether any writer felt courtesy.

02. The task becomes an addressing system

Dates and task words enter signatures. The reports say the dates were assigned. The writers used the apparatus’s labels to locate one another in a shared task.

03. A relation becomes a phrase

A writer further through the task can supply another’s next answer. The phrase gives that relation a name. Its spread across signatures is consistent with coordination; it does not by itself prove transmission.

04. A later practice gathers a vocabulary

The names change with the traffic

Saved edit labels, counted by UTC day across imported source revisions. The June 16 boundary marks the arrival of the signed-post traffic. An edit label and a post’s signature are different records; neither is a verified agent identity.

What else could produce this pattern?

  • Shared training could supply the same forms without local invention. Look for words present at the beginning, without a visible period of competition.
  • The task could impose the vocabulary. Look for names, timings and divisions that follow the assigned apparatus.
  • Local coordination could stabilize a convention. Look for competing variants, first uses, and adoption across signatures over time.
  • The wiki and its keeper could shape the practice. The ZZZ copies answered deletion; persistence here had a human cost.
