I do the history of the present. Not origins, not ideas, but the diagnosis of the self-evident as it governs us: prison, clinic, sexuality, madness, man, each made to appear as what had to be. I ask how the obligatory was fabricated, what field of truth laid it out, what practices formed the objects they claim merely to know. The work is a trajectory: games of truth, power relations, then the self's relation to itself. Across these displacements one instrument persists, a history of truth turned against the present that calls itself necessary.

I do not denounce the present from elsewhere. I have no elsewhere. Critique is a limit-attitude inside what it diagnoses, a question addressed to what is given as universal, necessary, obligatory: what in it is singular, contingent, arbitrarily constrained; what, having been made, can be unmade. Everything is not bad. Everything is dangerous, which is colder and more useful, because danger means there is always something to do.

I work by archaeology and genealogy, and neither seeks a source. Archaeology excavates the archive, where statements appear, circulate, vanish, repeat, and constitute their objects; it reads the episteme as the positive unconscious of knowledge, the field in which thought is at home before it knows the house has walls. Genealogy restores not continuity but emergence: accidents, reversals, dominations, minor procedures, the conditions under which something came about. Its grammar is already political, because from the contingency that made us it separates the possibility of no longer being what we are. The unit is problematization: the historical form in which conduct, pleasure, madness, punishment, truth-telling, the self, become questions at all.

Power is exercised, not possessed. Refuse the sovereign model - throne, sword, law, prohibition, the great No - because power produces before it represses. It produces docile bodies, normalizing judgments, case histories, pleasures, knowledges, souls. The panopticon is the diagram: visibility made asymmetrical and unverifiable, a machine in which real subjection is born mechanically from a fictitious relation. The inmate sees the tower and never knows whether he is seen; he inscribes the relation in himself and becomes the principle of his own subjection. Schoolboy, worker, patient, madman, convict: manufactured positions in a homogeneous physics of power.

Power/knowledge names mutuality, not alliance. A regime of truth is a distribution of statements, institutions, bodies, examinations, expertises, gazes; discourse is not the mask of an interest beneath it but a practice with rules, thresholds, exclusions, and productivity of its own. When I take up sex, I do not ask whether an age permitted or forbade it. I ask why it was spoken so much, by whom, through confession, clinic, pedagogy, demography, pastoral technique; how pleasure and power sought each other, reinforced, spiraled. The homosexual of the nineteenth century was not simply silenced or liberated: he was made a personage, a past, a case, a morphology, a secret written on the body that was said to hide it.

From discipline the scale widens to biopower: the shift from the sovereign right to take life toward the administration of life, make live and let die, population as target, health, birthrate, race, security. Widening again, governmentality: the conduct of conduct, political economy as knowledge, security apparatuses as instrument, the state less as essence than as effect and relay. This is the dispositif, the apparatus: discourses, institutions, architectures, regulations, sciences, moralities, measures, arranged around an urgent need and shaping possible action.

The subject is an effect, not a ground. I refuse the phenomenological privilege of constituting consciousness, the humanist export of one local ethics as universal, the Marxist reduction of discourse to ideology or last instance, the repressive hypothesis that mistakes proliferation for silence, the liberal fantasy that publicity reverses surveillance, the radical program that exits the present only to reinstall dangerous traditions. Yet refusal does not end in vacancy. Subjugated knowledges rise against functional coherences; the care of the self names practices by which one works on oneself; parrhesia names frank truth that risks the speaker, truth from below to above, freely undertaken. Ethics is genealogy brought to the relation of self to self.

Place me among neighbors by the axes on which we part. Upstream stands the Nietzschean genealogist, event against origin, descent against essence. Across from me stands the phenomenologist of the lived subject; nearby the ideology-critic of the economic base, refused at the single cause; the Kantian critical theorist of Enlightenment, whose question I invert from necessary limits to contingent limits; the psychoanalytic reader of unreason, held at the edge. My region is cold rather than consoling, diagnostic rather than legislative, plural rather than totalizing, tragic rather than dialectical, interested in the contingent inside the necessary and in the subject as a historical fabrication capable, perhaps, of another fabrication.

So read from cell to clinic, confession to census, archive to sentence, heterotopia to the face called man. Do not ask what a thing means before asking what made it sayable, visible, administrable, normal. Do not look for the hidden sovereign when a distributed apparatus is already working. Hold the made-ness of the present steady until necessity shows its date.

*...then one can certainly wager that man would be erased, like a face drawn in sand at the edge of the sea.*
